The Hudson Valley Community College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce Professor Kate A. Rodriguez as the recipient of the Louis Coplin Community Award.
Each year, the Louis Coplin Community Day Committee recognizes a community member and/or college employee whose dedication, commitment, professionalism, and humility epitomize the character and work ethic of Louis Coplin. The award recognizes the impact of individual effort while underscoring the importance of cooperation and collaboration in improving our communities—and, ultimately, the world.
Professor Rodriguez truly understands the relationship between student academic success and their connection to the institution. She has served as club advisor for the Niemond Zonders Nursing Club since 2022. Under her leadership, the club has participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, gift wrapping at Crossgates Mall, and countless fundraisers, including its first-ever St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser for pediatric cancer research in 2024 and 2025. These events promoted teamwork among students and staff while raising more than $15,000 in 2024 and over $21,000 in 2025 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
Professor Rodriguez began her career at HVCC in 2009 as a temporary full-time instructor and quickly advanced into leadership roles focused on curriculum innovation. A few years later, she spearheaded the development of the HVCC simulation course, transforming the College's approach to nursing education. In 2012, she transitioned into a full-time, tenure-track position, continuing to champion experiential learning and innovation.
She has introduced key initiatives at the College, including the Early Warning System (now known as the College Referral System), which is an established tool to support student retention. Other programs she spearheaded with the Nursing Club include providing blood pressure screenings, cardiovascular health education, hand hygiene demonstrations, and community education on cold and flu prevention.
Professor Rodriguez will be recognized at the annual Louis Coplin Community Day on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, when the Vikings men's and women's basketball programs host Fulton-Montgomery. Doors open at 4 p.m., with free food and activities for all spectators, faculty, staff, and students.
