Hudson Valley Community College is proud to announce that four student-athletes have been recognized as SUNY Scholar Athletes of the Year for the Spring 2025-26 semester. Baseball's Logan Norman, women's tennis player Bryn Fitzmaurice, men's outdoor track and field athlete Nicholas Rushford, and women's outdoor track and field athlete Ava Dwyer were selected for the honor following outstanding performances in both the classroom and competition.
The SUNY Scholar Athlete Award honors student-athletes for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition. Students are nominated by their institutions based on their cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors. During the fall, winter, and spring seasons, student-athletes from each division are selected as winners, with two student-athletes later chosen as the overall men's and women's winners from each division.
Logan Norman – Baseball
A sophomore majoring in Individual Studies, Norman completed the academic year with a 3.47 cumulative GPA and earned a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. On the field, Norman helped guide the Vikings to a 35-5 record, a No. 4 national ranking, and the Region 3 East Division title.
Norman produced one of the most accomplished seasons in program history, batting .500 on the year, ranking fourth nationally in the NJCAA and second in Region 3. He finished the season with 71 hits and concluded his career with a program-record 125 hits. Norman also established new program records for career doubles, single-season runs scored, and career runs scored.
For his outstanding performance, Norman earned Region 3 All-Region First Team and All-Defensive Glove Team honors.
Bryn Fitzmaurice – Women's Tennis
A freshman Business Administration major, Fitzmaurice posted a 3.32 GPA while putting together a remarkable debut season for the Vikings.
Competing at No. 1 singles, Fitzmaurice completed the regular season undefeated and continued her success into postseason competition. At the NJCAA National Tournament, she advanced to the consolation final after earning a pair of impressive 8-1 victories over higher-ranked opponents.
Her outstanding season was recognized with selections to both the Region 3 First Team and All-Conference First Team.
Nicholas Rushford – Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Rushford, a sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice, maintained a 3.46 GPA while serving as one of the Vikings' top performers throughout the outdoor track and field season.
He led the team in the 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay squad. At the NJCAA National Championships, Rushford recorded a personal-best performance in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries, finishing sixth before placing fifth in the finals with a time of 15.98 seconds.
Rushford also played a key role in helping Hudson Valley's men's team finish second overall at the national championships, the highest finish in program history. The 4x100-meter relay team earned NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors with a third-place finish.
At the Region 3 Championships, Rushford captured individual titles in both the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, becoming the only athlete in the event to break the one-minute mark in the 400 hurdles. He also helped lead the Vikings to a Region 3 championship in the 4x100-meter relay.
Ava Dwyer – Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Dwyer, a freshman Health Sciences major, exemplified excellence in both academics and athletics, finishing the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
On the track, Dwyer helped lead the Vikings to a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships, the best national finish in program history for the women's program. Throughout the season, she posted the team's top performances in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, and 3,000-meter steeplechase while also contributing to the 4x800-meter relay team.
At the national championships, Dwyer recorded personal-best performances in both the 800 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing fourth in the 800 meters and earning All-American honors with a runner-up finish in the steeplechase.
She was named Region 3 champion in the 800 meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase, and 4x800-meter relay, helping the Vikings secure back-to-back Region 3 team championships.
The recognition of four Viking student-athletes highlights Hudson Valley's continued commitment to academic excellence and athletic achievement. Their accomplishments reflect the dedication, discipline, and leadership demonstrated by student-athletes across the department both in competition and in the classroom.
