Hudson Valley Community College baseball opened its home slate in emphatic fashion on Thursday afternoon, sweeping SUNY Broome by scores of 15-3 and 10-2 behind an explosive offense and dominant pitching performances.
In Game 1, the Vikings' bats erupted early and never slowed in a 15-3 victory. Robert Melo set the tone in the first inning with a two-run home run to right field, and Red Maron followed with a solo shot to left to make it 3-0. Triston Santos then ripped an RBI double, Nicholas Mirabile added an RBI double of his own, and catcher Michael Poltar capped the opening frame with an RBI double as Hudson Valley jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
Melo struck again in the third, launching his second home run of the game — a three-run blast to center — as part of a four-run inning that also included a sacrifice fly from Poltar. In the fourth, the Vikings plated five more runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run sacrifice fly from Mirabile and a three-run triple from Melo, who finished the game with two homers and seven runs batted in to lead the offense.
On the mound, right-hander Alexander Deitz earned the win, working four innings and allowing just four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out eight and walking two. Sean Moore closed the game with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one without allowing a hit. Hudson Valley collected 10 hits, showed patience with eight walks — including three from Nico DeSanto — and ran wild on the bases with seven stolen bases, led by two from Logan Norman.
Game 2 featured another complete effort as Hudson Valley secured a 10-2 win to finish the sweep. Mirabile showcased his all-around game, reaching base repeatedly with three walks and a key two-run single as the Vikings once again controlled the tempo on offense.
Hudson Valley struck first in the opening inning when Melo lifted a sacrifice fly that brought in two runs. The Vikings broke the game open in the third, scoring seven runs on four hits. Mirabile delivered a two-run single, DeSanto followed with an RBI single, Maron drove a two-run double into the gap, and two additional runs scored on a SUNY Broome error to push the lead firmly into double digits.
Starter Eliezer Rosario was dominant on the hill, striking out 10 over four shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks. Left-hander Finn Harkin closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief, yielding no hits while striking out two. Offensively, Hudson Valley finished with nine hits, led by DeSanto's three-hit performance. Mirabile reached base four times, including his three walks, and sparked the running game with three stolen bases as the Vikings swiped eight bases in the nightcap and turned a double play defensively.
With the home-opening sweep, the Vikings continue their strong start and look to carry the momentum into the weekend.
The Vikings returns to action on Saturday, March 28, when the Vikings travel to Binghamton to face SUNY Broome again in a road doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
