The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team delivered a dominant showing at home on Thursday, sweeping Cayuga in a doubleheader with 12-2 and 10-3 victories.
Hudson Valley's offense stayed hot throughout the day, combining timely hitting, patience at the plate, and aggressive baserunning to secure the sweep.
In Game 1, the Vikings rolled to a 12-2 win behind a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching from Alexander Deitz. The sophomore right-hander earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings while striking out six.
Hudson Valley jumped out early in the first inning, capitalizing on an error before Red Maron drew a walk and Joshua Ortiz delivered an RBI single. The Vikings continued to build their lead across the next several innings, highlighted by a solo home run from Maron in the fourth.
Nico DeSanto led the team with three RBIs, while Logan Norman and Maron each collected two hits. The Vikings showed patience at the plate with nine walks, including two each from Ortiz and Nicholas Mirabile. Hudson Valley also applied pressure on the basepaths, swiping nine stolen bases, with Mirabile and Norman each recording multiple steals.
Defensively, the Vikings were flawless, committing no errors, while Robert Melo led the way with seven chances in the field.
In Game 2, Hudson Valley continued its strong play with a 10-3 victory.
The Vikings again struck early, plating three runs in the first inning behind contributions from DeSanto, Maron, and Ortiz. They extended their lead in the fourth inning when Norman delivered an RBI double and Melo crushed a two-run home run to right field.
Norman added the exclamation point in the fifth inning with a three-run home run, finishing the game with a team-high three RBIs.
Jeremy Graham earned the win on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) over four and one-third innings while striking out four. Sean Moore provided excellent relief, tossing two and two-thirds scoreless innings and striking out three.
The Vikings totaled 10 hits in Game 2, with Melo leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance. Norman added two hits, while Michael Poltar also contributed with a multi-hit effort.
