Hudson Valley Community College baseball is moving on in the Region 3 playoffs after a dominant Sunday sweep of #4 seeded Finger Lakes at Joe Bruno Stadium.
The Vikings opened the day with a commanding 10-0 victory behind a dominant outing from freshman pitcher Brendan Shea. Shea struck out 10 batters over five shutout innings while allowing just four hits to lead Hudson Valley on the mound.
Hudson Valley wasted little time offensively, scoring in the first inning before erupting for five runs in the second. Logan Norman drove in a run with a double, while Red Maron delivered the big blow with a three-run single. Nico DeSanto also added an RBI knock in the inning as the Vikings quickly built control of the game.
The offense continued to roll throughout the opener as Hudson Valley totaled 12 hits. Maron finished with three RBIs and two stolen bases, while Triston Santos, Norman, DeSanto, Maron, and Robert Melo each recorded two hits. The Vikings also played flawless defense behind Shea, committing no errors in the shutout victory.
Hudson Valley carried that momentum into game two, cruising to an 11-1 win to complete the sweep and punch its ticket to the next round of the postseason.
Robert Melo got the scoring started with a solo home run in the first inning before the Vikings added four more runs in the second to take early control. Hudson Valley broke the game open in the fifth inning with five more runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Nick Commisso, Joshua Ortiz, and Chase Morrison.
Eliezer Rosario turned in another strong pitching performance for the Vikings, striking out eight batters while allowing just one run over five innings of work.
The Vikings once again produced offensively across the lineup, finishing with 13 hits in the nightcap. Ortiz, Santos, Morrison, and Melo each collected two hits, while Michael Poltar, Santos, Norman, and Melo each drove in two runs.
Hudson Valley closed out the victory in dramatic fashion as Michael Poltar delivered a walk-off single over first base to score Chase Morrison and secure the run-rule win.
The Vikings outscored Finger Lakes 21-1 across the two-game sweep and now await reseeding for next weekend's Region 3 playoff action.
