The Hudson Valley Community College men's basketball team opened its 2025-26 season with a hard-fought 92-85 loss to Sullivan County Community College on Sunday afternoon at the McDonough Sports Complex.
The Vikings battled throughout in a high-tempo matchup that featured several lead changes and strong individual performances. Sullivan led 41-38 at the half and managed to hold off Hudson Valley's late push to secure the win.
Sophomore guard Julius Reed led the way for the Vikings in his collegiate debut, pouring in 26 points on 10-of-24 shooting while adding six assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Jacob Baccaro turned in an efficient performance with 15 points on 7-of-10 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds. First-year guard Kemontae Thawe added 15 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc.
As a team, the Vikings shot 42.5 percent from the field and converted 17-of-23 from the free-throw line. Sullivan countered with 48.4 percent shooting and an 80 percent mark from the stripe, while holding a narrow edge on the glass.
Despite the loss, Hudson Valley showed flashes of potential and offensive balance in its first outing of the year. The Vikings will look to regroup and build off Sunday's performance as they prepare for their next contest on Thursday, November 6, at home against Orange at 7pm.
