The Hudson Valley Community College men's lacrosse team dropped a home contest to Onondaga Community College, 30-6, on Wednesday evening at the Outdoor Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 1-4 on the season.
Hudson Valley got on the board early as freshman attackman Josh Whitmore found the back of the net just under a minute into play. After Onondaga responded with a run of goals, Nathan Stone and Romeyn Murray connected late in the first quarter to keep the Vikings within striking distance at 7-2.
Onondaga pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Hudson Valley 13-1 to take a commanding 20-3 lead into halftime. Despite the deficit, the Vikings continued to battle, with Stone tallying a man-up goal in the second quarter and adding two more in the second half to finish with a team-high four goals.
Hudson Valley showed flashes offensively in the third quarter, as Nathan Stone scored off an assist from Dylan Ryan, who finished with two assists on the night. Stone added his fifth goal early in the fourth quarter to cap the Vikings' scoring.
Defensively, the Vikings were under pressure throughout the game, facing 75 total shots from Onondaga. Goalkeepers Brayden Cooper, Kevin Nicoll, and Nicholas Lagitch combined for 22 saves in the effort.
Onondaga controlled possession for much of the contest, winning 33 of 39 faceoffs and holding a 74-25 advantage in ground balls.
Hudson Valley will look to bounce back quickly as they return to action on Friday, hosting DuPage at 12:00 p.m. at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
