The Hudson Valley Community College softball team put together a strong showing on its home field Saturday, sweeping Jefferson Community College in a doubleheader to improve to 8-6 on the season.
In game one, the Vikings battled back and forth before securing a 6-4 victory. Hudson Valley struck first in the opening inning, but Jefferson responded with a two-run second to take the lead. The Vikings answered quickly, as Danskin delivered a key RBI single to regain the advantage. After multiple lead changes, Hudson Valley pulled ahead for good in the sixth inning. Castiglione drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Danskin came through again with an RBI single to extend the lead. Sawitzki earned the complete-game victory in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out two. Danskin led the offense from the nine spot in the lineup, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while the defense turned two double plays to help secure the win.
The Vikings carried that momentum into game two, where they completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory behind a dominant pitching performance from Kristel. Kristel was in control throughout, striking out 12 batters over seven innings while allowing just one run on six hits. After falling behind early, Hudson Valley responded in the fourth inning when Ferracane drove in the tying run. The Vikings took the lead for good in the fifth, as Currao delivered an RBI single. Hudson Valley continued to add insurance runs late to pull away. Currao led the offense with two RBIs, while both she and Bonafede recorded two hits in the win.
With the sweep, Hudson Valley improves to 8-6 overall and continues to build momentum early in the season.
The Vikings return to action on Wednesday, April 9, when they host Onondaga Community College for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
